Back when the game first came out, I used to think luck played a much bigger role in the game than it actually does. Obviously something like what items you get is based on luck, but shooting as a whole is not that luck based. A lot of what makes a successful shooting team is being able to set up passes for a higher chance that you will score.

Tricking is all on the player. Unless in rare circumstances, it will be the player that determines whether the trick goes in or not.

Then there are things such as dry bones/ toad's skillshots that go directly into the goal. Whether it goes in or not, it is not the luck that should be blamed on the person that scores, but the fact that the person on defense let the person on offense commit the skillshot.

A lot of the luck in the game is minimal, and luck does not play an important part in who wins the game. There is a few little things that are out of the players control, but in the end, it comes down to who plays better, not luck.

I know that there will be people that will go a lot more in depth than i will, but i just wanted to get a conversation started.

Luck in this game at most causes a fluke once in a while. But the reality is that skilled players do consistently well.

Without a doubt the chance of a shot can be affected by a setup, however, that setup (unless it's that annoying midfield red ball cross pass) is still not 100% accurate. Each setup is dependent on the goalie's positioning and is still sometimes blocked. Even with the use of tricks and setups, a shooting team will inevitably take random shots which are affected even more by luck based on a random value, charge and positioning on the field. While the chance of these goals scoring can be maximized it will ultimately be up to the game's algorithms whether they go in or not. However, and here's really the only part we differ, these changes in the game's value can easily sway a match. Many games go to 7-4, 7-5, or 7-6. Most of the time a shooter's luck may cause the outcome of one or two goals to change, and even more in extreme cases. Even one or two goals can greatly turn the tide of the match if scored at certain times, either changing momentum, or causing a player to break away with confidence.

If the two players have an obvious difference in skill level, this really doesn't apply at all. However if the two are close, it can cause the better player to lose especially if they dwell on it. Generally a player wants to learn to disregard luck and learn to beat a player even with disadvantages, but during that transitionary period in which two players' skill levels are similar, luck can be very annoying.

Yes, luck does play a role in games; but it's part of the game and you can't do anything about it.
